PRP Q&A with Dr Michelle Valdez

Naturopathic Doctor

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a regenerative treatment derived from a patient’s own blood. It involves extracting a small amount of blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from other components. The resulting plasma is rich in platelets, which contain growth factors and proteins that promote healing and tissue regeneration. PRP is often used in various medical and cosmetic procedures to accelerate healing, reduce inflammation and improve tissue repair.

In what ways can PRP be used?
PRP can be used in various ways to address aesthetic and medical concerns. In aesthetics, PRP can be applied topically or injected to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and enhance overall skin appearance. It can also be utilised for hair restoration by injecting PRP into the scalp to promote hair growth. In a medical context, PRP injections can be used to aid in tissue healing and repair, addressing musculoskeletal injuries, joint pain and promoting recovery after
certain surgical procedures.

What drew you to want to use PRP in your practice?
As a naturopathic doctor with an interest in aesthetics, I was drawn to the use of PRP in my practice due to its natural and holistic approach to rejuvenation. PRP harnesses the healing power of a patient’s own blood, utilising the growth factors and proteins found in platelets to stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture and reduce signs of aging. It aligns with my philosophy of promoting the body’s innate ability to heal and restore itself, providing safe and effective aesthetic enhancements without synthetic substances.

Who could benefit from receiving a PRP treatment?
PRP treatments can benefit a diverse range of individuals. Those seeking aesthetic improvements, such as reducing fine lines, wrinkles and improving skin texture can benefit from PRP’s collagen-stimulating properties. Patients experiencing hair loss or thinning can also benefit from PRP’s potential to promote hair regrowth. Athletes and individuals with musculoskeletal injuries may benefit from PRP’s ability to accelerate tissue healing and reduce inflammation. Additionally, individuals who prefer natural and minimally invasive approaches to rejuvenation may find PRP treatments appealing.

Could PRP be combined with other treatments or therapies for enhanced results?
In my practice, I’ve seen that combining PRP with other natural therapies can truly enhance the results. I often recommend complementary treatments like scalp massage to boost blood flow, tailored topical oils to nourish the scalp and personalised nutrition and supplement recommendations to ensure optimal intake of essential vitamins and minerals for healthy hair. It’s crucial to remember that everyone is unique, so treatment plans will be tailored to individual needs in order to achieve the best possible outcomes.
