In 2008, we introduced a 2% environmental levy on all stays. This goes towards the Soneva Foundation, which invests in a variety of projects that have a positive environmental, social and economic impact, offsetting direct and indirect carbon emissions, such as resort activities and guest flights.
In our 30 years as a trailblazer we have successfully inculcated several world-leading environmental projects.
The Soneva Total Impact Assessment provides the quantitative assessments of all our social and environmental impacts. This includes the direct impacts at our resorts and indirect impacts via our supply chain and guest air travel.
Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani have installed 5.2MWp solar PV and 4.7MWh of battery storage ensuring that 40% of electricity comes from renewable energy.
At Soneva, we see waste as a valuable resource. Our Waste-to-Wealth programme has generated US$3.5 million through waste management and vegetable production. A key highlight is the Soneva Art & Glass Studio at Soneva Fushi, where renowned artists transform waste glass into stunning artworks available for purchase—creating both beauty and value from waste.
As stewards of the ocean, we are committed to protecting marine biodiversity around our resorts. In partnership with Save Our Seas, the Olive Ridley Project and the Soneva Foundation, we support vital regeneration efforts. We are proud to have initiated and funded the local NGO Soneva Namoona. Soneva Namoona provides an exemplary blueprint for all Maldivian islands, demonstrating how to effectively manage waste, reduce the use of single-use plastics, and inspire a love of the marine environment.
Soneva has successfully implemented an island-wide, insecticide-free mosquito management solution at our properties in the Maldives reducing the mosquito population by 95%. This reduction has led to an increase in beneficial insects, such as butterflies, dragonflies, and carpenter bees, improving biodiversity and even enhancing pollination in our organic gardens.

Care for Children was originally established in China to provide foster care for orphaned children, successfully placing over 1 million children in foster homes. A recent UNICEF report recommends a transition from institutional foster care for Thailand’s orphaned and vulnerable children. At the invitation of the Thai government, Care for Children has now partnered with the government to provide training in government-run orphanages on local family placement care practice.
Soneva has funded Care for Children to open a National Foster Care Training and Resource Centre in Chiang Mai. Care for Children will strategically manage and deliver its national training programme from this centre. There are approximately 50,000 orphaned and vulnerable children living in some form of institutional care in Thailand, and the goal is to support the government to ensure all children have the opportunity to live with a family they can call their own.
