How did you come to be working at our new The Den at Soneva Jani?
I first discovered Soneva while I was on vacation in the Maldives. A friend mentioned that there was a unique resort that provides a different experience compared to all the other resorts in the Maldives. At that time, Soneva Fushi was looking for a part-time babysitter, so I joined the team in 2015 and was quickly promoted to a full-time Den Host. Soneva Jani opened in 2016 and after one year I was offered the position of Den Supervisor at Soneva Jani, where I was able to take my passion and skills to new heights. And now, with the opening of the new Soneva Jani Den, I am truly excited to realise a long-awaited dream and welcome our youngest guests to a magical facility full of fun, creative and sustainable experiences.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I usually start the day with a morning briefing with all the Heads of Teams. I then lead a briefing session with my own Den team, during which we go through the daily activities and share important information about our young in-house guests. While my team is facilitating the children’s activities, I take some time to do administrative tasks. At times when operations get busy, I also get involved in the logistics of activities and work alongside my team.
In the afternoon, if there are activities that require more attention, such as swimming or snorkelling, I support those. I also spend some time with the team at the end of the day to follow up on the day’s events, and always make sure to follow up with our little Sonevians about their day and all the activities they participated in. Once it is time to close The Den, the entire team cleans and tidies all areas before leaving for the day.
More recently, I have also been concentrating on getting the new Soneva Jani Den ready for operations: purchasing equipment and toys, designing new activities and hiring and training Hosts, which has been an exciting time full of growth.
How can you amuse so many kids and teens for so long?
The Den is packed with different types of fun and educational activities for children. At the end of each month, we create a Den activity calendar for the following month, which incorporates a variety of educational, fun, creative and high-energy activities for children. My role is to ensure that behind each entertaining programme there is a deeper, meaningful purpose, whether it be an opportunity to bond with one’s family, build social skills, be creative and explore or provide a playful environment to learn. Activities such as Garden Explore, Treasure Hunt, Adventure Day, Water Sports Picnic Fun and Mini Astronomy are created not just for the entertainment of children, but also to provide an environment where children are engaged in active learning. Alongside Soneva Jani’s natural setting and our monthly activity calendar, the entire Den team plays an important role in this too. The distinctive experience and attitude of our Hosts are what truly set The Den apart from any other kid’s club in the Maldives.
