Recognising that coral reefs in the Maldives and around the world are in crisis due to climate change, the Soneva Foundation Coral Restoration programme convened a dialogue from January 9 to 12, 2025, with global expert in coral science and finance to discuss urgent measures to promote reef restoration and regeneration.
Reefs across the world have lost half their living coral cover already in recent years, and scientists are convinced that the majority of tropical corals will be lost forever if the world fails to meet the Paris climate limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Held at Soneva Fushi in the Maldives and co-facilitated by Professor Callum Roberts from Exeter University and Karen Sack, executive director of the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA), the Soneva Dialogue on Coral Reef Restoration and Resilience brought together scientists working at the forefront of tropical coral reef restoration, alongside finance and policy specialists, to combine their experience and creativity to propose transformative ways to address this crisis.
The participants released a statement after the conclusion of the meeting which outlined the challenge and their proposed solutions to enable reef regeneration on a scale never previously attempted.
