This week we had a splashingly good time taking 60 local children from Baa Atoll Education Centre on Eydhafushi Island out snorkelling on our house reef. This bright, energetic and excited group have completed the Learn to Swim program sponsored by Soneva Fushi.
To celebrate the team at Soneva Fushi wanted to take them one step further and show them the beautiful marine life found right on their doorstep. Many of these children had never been snorkelling before and it was a special pleasure for us to help them discover the underwater world.
Thanks to the great organization of Naadha, our Community Engagement Manager, and with our enthusiastic helpers from Watersports, the Den, Mr.Fridays, HR and Soneva in Aqua we ensured the children were safe and happy throughout their visit. We couldn’t have done it without them and their skills in beach games and on the safety paddleboards went above and beyond. Teamwork really made some dreams come true!
For me the best thing about this visit was that some of our new mini snorkellers were children of Soneva Fushi hosts. These proud parents were able to participate in the two day activities, encouraging their children to take the plunge while they took the photos! We are especially excited at the number of girls willing to don their masks and get out to the reef, we find it encouraging that all children are able to enjoy the outdoors.
One of the main goals of the Learn to Swim program is that by helping the children to see this extra special part of their country we can inspire them to become the future marine biologists and ambassadors for the marine life in the Maldives. We are keeping our fins crossed!
